The three finish levels
Most Indian interior projects fall into three bands. Basic finishes — laminate shutters, standard hardware and emulsion paint — typically cost ₹1,000–1,500 per sq ft. Premium work with acrylic or PU finishes, soft-close hardware and feature ceilings runs ₹1,800–2,500. Luxury interiors with veneers, imported hardware and custom lighting start around ₹3,000 per sq ft.
These numbers are averages. The same specification can vary 15–20% between a metro like Mumbai and a tier-2 city because of labour and logistics costs.
Where the money goes
Carpentry — wardrobes, kitchen, TV units and storage — usually takes about 40% of the budget. Civil changes and false ceilings take about 20%, paint and flooring another 20%, electrical and lighting around 12%, and décor the rest.
Kitchens and bathrooms cost more per square foot than bedrooms because they combine carpentry, plumbing, waterproofing and hardware in a small area.
How to keep your budget in control
Freeze your layout before work starts — changes mid-way are the biggest cause of overruns. Ask for an itemised BOQ with board grades, hardware brands and finish codes. Spend on things you touch every day, like hinges, channels and countertops, and save on décor you can upgrade later.
